Human Rights Day

Today is Human Rights Day ! This Day is celebrated across the world to respect every human being's rights and freedoms. According to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour," Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime....Poverty eradication is an achievable goal." Remember the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay. On this occasion, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon pointed out that the world faced a food emergency and global financial downturn and there was political repression in a number of countries. So how much you respect others rights and freedoms ?

Guantanamo is a shame and shouldn't be allowed or not even tolerated from the rest of the world ! Human rights ??? let me laugh ! That's like the concentration camps ! which should never happen again ! but they still happen !

Hi Deepak...

Thank you for the post...

I decided not to post on Human Rights Day...read in The Hindu yesterday that thre-days old baby was killed by red ants in a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh...

was looking to post that..but decided to leave that too -- Was it a random occurance to leave..was it an accident or a negligence, was any human rights violated -- where's the world moving to??

so disheartening -- what to claim of Humans and their Rights!!

anyway...nice to see some one remembering and acknowledging..

wishes,
devika

It should be a day about human rights more a day about human wrongs! This of course is the main cause.

Thanks for bringing this up! Human Rights is an area of deep concern in our country, taking the instance of places such as J&K and The North East!

The sooner the government does aomething about this, the better it is for the country and its image across the globe!

By the way, are you the editor of the newsweek?

Cheers

Rakesh

Thanks for reminding us. Human rights is such a basic, crucial issue.

Hi Deepak,

Thanks for posting this. It is the reminder of the irony of the human condition that something so dear can so easily be subverted, either by the lust for power, greed and ideology.

It is also a reminder that with the globalization of our economies and the resulting urbanization of our populations, today more than half the citizens of our world live in cities. Fully a third of them live is slums, in conditions so abject and horrible that survival often trumps human rights.

Good point. Human rights is not just something for governments and "others". It concerns how we meet and greet each other every day.
